liver of sulfur is a great way to give copper and brass that aged look. if you lightly sand it with an extremely high grit sand paper, some of the metals natural color will show through.

I was looking to do something similar and Liked your piece most by far. Did you use an hydraullic press to form the center piece? I hope you aren't offended as I will probably adapt the tail design for my own piece....

Thanks, they haven't been feeling exceptionally magical lately. It's been a while since I have had time to make the jewellery I love!

it is very well done! How did you give it the old appearance? I can't ever seem to really get copper of brass to look aged without looking unevenly so. Which is good for some things, but not always.

The wings are pierced out with a jewellers saw. Actually, give me a couple of days and I will post a quick tutorial on my jewelry making blog. [link]

This is beautiful! I love scrolling on the wings. Do you start with a basic sketch or technical drawing or something else?

Yep, I usually start with a sketch, although when it comes to making it in the metal I have to change lots of things so that it will all fit and work within the confines of the metal itself. So a lot of it is made up as I go. Usually the final product ends up being slightly simplified from the original sketch. Check out my blog www.lostwaxoz.com you'll see a blog post with one of my original dragonfly sketches.
